Frequently asked questions
Temple jewellery
What is temple jewellery?
Temple jewellery is traditional South Indian gold jewellery decorated with motifs of deities, temples and sacred symbols such as Goddess Lakshmi, the lotus and the peacock. It was first made to adorn temple idols and classical dancers, and today it is worn by brides and at festivals.
Temple Jewellery GuideIs temple jewellery made of real gold?
It can be. Traditional temple jewellery is made in 22-karat gold, while fashion versions use gold-plated silver or alloy. Indriya's temple jewellery is BIS Hallmark certified gold with a HUID code, so its purity can be verified.
Bureau of Indian Standards (opens indriya.com in a new tab)Which temple jewellery is best for a South Indian wedding?
Most South Indian brides wear a layered set: a choker, a long haram or kasu mala, jhumkas, a vaddanam (waist belt), armlets and a maang tikka. Lakshmi and peacock motifs in an antique gold finish are the most popular bridal choices.
Varalakshmi Vratham editHow do you clean temple jewellery at home?
Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cotton cloth after every wear. For a deeper clean, use a soft brush with mild soap in lukewarm water, rinse, and dry it completely. Avoid harsh chemicals, and have stone-set pieces cleaned professionally.
Temple Jewellery GuideHow should temple jewellery be stored?
Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or lined box, away from air and moisture. Add a silica gel sachet and keep it away from perfume and sprays so the antique finish does not dull.
Temple Jewellery GuideWhat do the Lakshmi, peacock and lotus motifs mean?
Goddess Lakshmi stands for wealth and prosperity, the peacock for grace (it is the mount of Lord Murugan) and the lotus for purity, as the flower Lakshmi sits upon. Ganesha motifs stand for new beginnings, which makes them popular with brides.
Temple Jewellery GuideWhich temple jewellery should I wear for Varalakshmi Vratham?
Lakshmi motifs suit the festival best: a Lakshmi haram or a kasu mala strung with Lakshmi coins, paired with temple jhumkas. Antique gold finishes look right with a silk saree for the puja.

What is a BIS hallmark and HUID?
A BIS hallmark is the Bureau of Indian Standards' certification of gold purity. It has three marks: the BIS logo, the purity grade (such as 22K916) and a 6-character HUID code that is unique to that piece.
Bureau of Indian Standards (opens indriya.com in a new tab)What does 22K916 mean?
22K916 means 22 karat gold that is 91.6% pure. It is the most common purity for traditional and temple jewellery in India.
Bureau of Indian Standards (opens indriya.com in a new tab)How is the price of gold jewellery worked out?
The price is the day's gold rate multiplied by the weight of the piece, plus making charges and GST. Indriya shows the gold rate, making charges and taxes separately on the bill.
